Wetumpka High School Softball Player Mya Holt Voted 2023 ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Year
After a phenomenal 2023 season, Wetumpka softball player Mya Holt has been voted the 2022-23 ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Year, receiving 47.06% of possible votes over three other finalists.
Alongside Holt, the additional finalists were Sparkman softball/volleyball player Cassie Reasner, Prattville Christian volleyball/basketball player Hannah Jones, and Saraland track and field athlete/volleyball player Morgan Davis.
Holt, one of the state’s top players throughout the spring, helped lead the Indians to a phenomenal 2023 season in which they went 56-6-1 to win the Class 6A state title.
The Troy commit slashed .512/.597/1.092 while ranking among the state’s leaders with 22 HR and 96 RBI and recording a 1.690 OPS. Holt also stole 5 bases, stroked 20 doubles and 4 triples, drew 42 walks, and struck out only 18 times.
In the circle, Holt also was one of the state’s best this season, posting a 37-2 record with a 0.75 ERA and 223:36 K:BB ratio in 215.2 IP. She held opposing batters to a combined .140 AVG against, and she made 28 appearances in which she did not allow a single earned run.
Holt’s 2023 season including a March performance that earned her ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Month honors.
“She kind of did it all for us this year,” Wetumpka head softball coach Daryl Otwell said. “She had 37 wins in the circle, 22 home runs, and 96 RBIs, which led the country. She had a 0.75 ERA, so she was shutting people out. She pretty much did everything for us this year as far as leading our team.”
With her senior season at Wetumpka still ahead of her, Holt already owns a career .400+ AVG, 50 HR, and nearly 250 RBI, and a sub-2.00 ERA with 500+ strikeouts in the circle.
Otwell said Holt took her game to a new level this season.
“One thing that we saw was her strikeouts,” he Otwell. “Her velocity was up with more movement, so we saw a great improvement in her pitching.
“I thought the biggest change from last year to this year was her offense, which showed in the numbers with pitch selection, looking more comfortable in the box, and her strikeout numbers were down,” Otwell continued. “I thought she did a really good job from last year to this season on being better in the strike zone and swinging at better pitches.”
Clearly one of the state’s top players, Holt will again be a key factor as Wetumpka chases another state title.
“I think the biggest challenge for her going into next season is all the recognition, and as a coach, you don’t want her try to build that pressure and do too much,” Otwell said. “I’d like to see her continue to grow. We’re fortunate to have her for one more year, and like I told her, keep trying to get polished and prepared for the next step at Troy after next year.”
Congratulations once again to Wetumpka softball player Mya Holt, the ITG Next Alabama 2022-23 Female Athlete of the Year.
