When people see a bunch of skateboarders, they typically cringe and make sure there aren’t any dents in their cars. Most perceive skaters as derelict kids up to no good. But a man in Pensacola is trying to change the image of skateboarders. Jon Shell was the driving force behind creating Upward Intuition, an organization dedicated to channeling youth into positive achievements by utilizing skateboarding and community projects.
Formed this past year, Upward Intuition is comprised of approximately fifteen boys and girls, ages 7-13, and is much more than a skateboarding club. These young people spend as much time on their boards as they spend on youth-driven community projects. Shell believes that empowering young people inspires them to live with a purpose and to embrace the meaning of giving back. The group would ultimately like to see the creation of a city skateboard park somewhere in downtown Pensacola and are working with city leaders to see this dream come to reality.
So the next time you see a skateboarder, do not assume it is Jeff Spicoli! Very possibly, it is a young person dedicated to making a positive change.
