We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 Sandalwood football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.
2021 Stats
- Overall Record: 4-6
- Points Scored: 254
- Points Allowed: 221
Key Losses
One of the biggest losses for the Saints comes on the offensive side of the ball in quarterback Chris Calhoun, who made a significant impact in both the passing and running games (17 rushing TDs). One of Sandalwood’s leading receivers, Runye Norton, is another key loss on offense, while running back Jonah Eguakun has also moved on.
Undoubtedly the biggest loss on defense comes from star defensive end DeAnte McCray, who led the Saints with 12 sacks a year ago. Anthony Brackenridge is also a key name who has moved on; the linebacker ranked among the Saints’ leading tacklers last season.
Who’s Back
Sandalwood star running back Jordan Bean, a rising senior who rushed for 1,440 yards and nine touchdowns a year ago, is the most significant offensive returnee for the Saints. Jordan Gartrell also is back, and he’ll likely be among the Saints’ big producers at wide receiver. Jeremiah Huntley also returns in the running game.
On defense, Sandalwood returns numerous key names, headlined by the duo of CJ Allen and Sayvion Blount. Both were prominent tacklers and pass rushers for the Saints, and they return to lead a talented defense that also includes cornerback Elijah Copes, DJ Mista, Jeremiah Huntley, and more.
What to Expect
The Saints missed the Class 8A playoffs a year ago, but could’ve very easily been in a position to see the postseason, as three of their six losses came via one possession. There’s no denying how important it will be for the Saints to replace the lost production from Calhoun and McCray. One name who could help is Baylor Hayes, who transferred from Atlantic Coast. Overall, expect a bounceback season and a possible return to the playoffs in 2022.
Prediction
Sandalwood will win six games this season, and contend for a playoff spot.
