We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 Raines football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.
2021 Stats
- Overall Record: 8-3
- Points Scored: 281
- Points Allowed: 162
Key Losses
Raines is tasked with replacing a number of significant names on offense. That group is headlined by the duo of Carleton Butler Jr., and Reshawn Latimer Jr., who both saw time at quarterback a year ago. They were key names in the running game alongside Darnell Cummings, while the Vikings also lost their top two wideouts in Kareem Burke and Quincy Burroughs.
Defensively, the biggest losses come from Raines’ two leading tacklers, Rashard Hall and Kyree Hammond, each of whom collected more than 70 tackles a year ago. Other names, such as Travis Laster and Sabian Hendricks, are key losses to graduation along with Lawrence Cook, Derrick Griffin, and Jamari Watson, while two more prominent tacklers, Jamari Whitehead and Craig Jenkins, have transferred.
Who’s Back
The Vikings’ defense, led by four-star safety Kenton Kirkland, pass rusher Jahlil Richardson, JaMari Whitehead and Craig Jenkins, is again expected to be a strength for Raines in 2022. Marcel Bowes is another returnee to what should be a talented secondary, while Kilby Graham and Terrence Forbes will play key roles alongside Khalil Francis, who transferred from Andrew Jackson.
Offensively, the biggest returning name is wide receiver Tadarius Devoe, who could lead the Vikings in receiving this season. Raquez Bacon and Clifton Richardson could both play key roles in the running game, and Maurion Watkins is another name to watch for offensively.
What to Expect
There is no denying that Raines has numerous names to replace from a team that made a Class 5A playoff appearance a year ago, but the Vikings do have some key names returning, especially on defense. The offensive side of the ball is probably the biggest question mark facing the Vikings, but they’re poised for a big 2022 season from Tadarius Devoe in particular.
Overall, the Vikings should have everything needed to make yet another playoff appearance this season. Consider them a sleeper to watch for if they can replace some of those key losses on offense.
Prediction
Raines will win seven games and make a playoff appearance this season.
