4 Questions with Newberry Boys Basketball Coach Patrick Green

Newberry basketball coach with team

ITG Next spoke with Newberry Boys Basketball Head Coach, Patrick Green, about the Panthers impressive 2021-22 season, what makes this team “different”, and their impactful senior class.

Q: Your team has been one of the most impressive groups in Class 1A so far this season. What have been some of your biggest takeaways from this Panthers team so far both on and off the court?

A: The greatest thing I’ve seen is this group of guys care about each other and they care about doing their best on and off the court! They love to put in extra work and love playing for Newberry High School. That’s why coaching this group has been such a joy.

Q: How does this 2021-22 team compare to some of your previous teams at Newberry?

A: I think one of the biggest differences I’ve noticed is this year’s team will to win! We have not played our best sometimes but this team has simply refused to lose and that has worked well for us so far this year.

Q: You have an experienced team led by players such as Perrion Sylvester, Joe Carter, and more. How big of an impact have these seniors had on this team?

A: No way we have the record we have without those two guys and the rest of our senior class. This group does not talk a lot, but they are all leaders by example. In fact, sometimes they are too quiet for my taste. They will however, go through a brick wall for their teammates! That type of attitude and mentality has been very impactful for us!

Q: What are some goals that you have for the 2021-22 Newberry Panthers to finish the season?

A: The goal/standard at Newberry is the same every year. That is to compete for District Championships. Those are the things we feel like we can control. Anything else is icing on the cake!
