4 Questions with Jayson Roberts
Tamp Bay Tech Football Head Coach
“I’ve been at tech as head coach going into my 10th season this season.”
2. Talk about the competitive football there in the Tampa area?
“The competitive balance in Tampa has gotten broader in the past three season with Bloomingdale, Gaither, Tampa Catholic, and Steonbrenner joining us, Armwood and Plant as yearly playoff contenders.”
3. You’ve got some real talent on the team this year, including Greg Gaines. What’s it like having so many guys that are so heavily recruited?
“It’s been a blessing to have coached some elite talent here at Tech. In my time here, we’ve had a five-star Army All-American, four-star Under Armor All-American, and a potential Heisman candidate this season (Michael Penix), along with Greg Gaines now, Jamari Gassett (Buffalo commit), Henry Hughes (Rutgers commit), Steven Parker (UNC Charlotte commit), Norris Davis (Class of 2023 with Power Five offers), and Rod Gainey (will be No. 1 player in Class of 2024).”
4. You guys are 2-3, but with some tough losses, including your most recent game, a 43-42 loss to Plant. How do you get your team to forget about a heartbreaking loss and focus on the rest of the season?
“As for our record, I’m not too concerned. As a head coach in 2014, we were 2-4 at a point with a very similar team. We ended up righting the ship and advancing to the third round of the playoffs for the first time in school history. Our kids know once we get all our guys back from injury and quarantine we have a championship contender team.”
