Popular college and high school recruit ranking site 247Sports updated its composite player rankings for the Class of 2024 football recruits. Fifteen recruits have a grade higher than 0.99, and 31 players are now considered five-star prospects from this recruiting class. Let’s take a deeper look into these updated rankings.
Georgia is well represented in the top 10. The peach state’s three standouts include Johns Creek DL T.A. Cunningham (fourth), Jefferson LB Sammy Brown (sixth), and Buford ATH KJ Bolden (ninth).
A pair of IMG Academy (FL) teammates cracked the top 10: CB Desmond Ricks, who is the highest-ranked player in the nation, and CB Jordon Johnson-Rubell (10th).
Unlike previous recruiting classes, quarterbacks have not dominated this updated ranking; in fact, only four quarterbacks can be found in the top 30. Running backs aren’t present often either, as only three rushers are ranked in the top 50.
The highest ranked quarterback is Providence Day School’s (NC) Jadyn Davis (second), while the top ranked running back is IMG Academy’s Jerrick Gibson at 12th. The Ascenders once again have a talented roster with seven star players ranked within the top 50. They have filled their skill positions with up-and-coming talent from the state of Florida.
More reminiscent of the 2023 class rather than 2022, wide receiver recruits are plentiful in the 2024 rankings. Eight pass catchers clinched a spot in the top 50. Ryan Wingo of St. Louis University (MO) is the nation’s highest ranked receiver at third, and a pair of Florida wideouts, Jeremiah Smith and James Madison II, are the next best receivers on the list.
The front seven defensively also seems to have been a point of emphasis in the rankings. Duncanville (TX) LB Colin Simmons ranks just outside the top 10 at No. 11, and Pace Academy’s (GA) Hevin Brown-Shuler checks in just ahead of TJ Capers (Columbus, FL) at 17th. A pair of Texas products, Nigel Smith II and Zina Omeozulu, round out the defensive linemen in the top 30.
Out of the 88 total recruits ranked in the 2024 class, only three have committed so far. Florida State has locked down safety Jordan Pride (Blountstown, FL) and Dougherty (GA) ATH Kameron Davis, while USC gained the commitment of Aaron Butler (Calabasas, CA) at the end of January. This number will definitely grow in the late summer of 2022 and into the start of next football season.
The future of high school football is in good hands. Talent is becoming increasingly present in several states nationwide that previously had not been in the spotlight. Defense is becoming more of a priority, and these updated rankings have reflected that. How will these rankings change when they are updated again in the future? Let’s wait and see.
